JUNKBUSTERS PRAISES FTC REPORT ON JUNK EMAIL

Washington, DC -- July 14, 1998 -- Commenting on the report today from the Federal Trade Commission's Ad-Hoc Working Group on Unsolicited Commercial Email, Jason Catlett, President of Junkbusters Corp., issued the following statement:

The FTC's report is an excellent policy analysis of a problem that most people on the Internet already know far more about than they would like. The report's most important recommendation is to target enforcement action on spammers who use fake return addresses and forge headers misrepresenting the email's origin. Once spammers can't hide, they'll have to run from the millions of people they annoy every day. The Internet's best hope of containing spam right now is a combination of social pressure, vigilance by ISPs, and government action under existing laws. Sadly, the only anti-spam bill that has passed the Senate would actually make the problem worse by appearing to legitimize spam. The FTC has the right plan: sue more spammers, more often, for more offenses.

Junkbusters's site (http://www.junkbusters.com) is a leading consumer resource on the control of telemarketing calls, unwanted mail, email, and commercial invasions of privacy. The company's flagship service, Junkbusters Declare (SM), gives consumers a free and easy way to say what they want and don't want from direct marketers, and to tell companies that sell mailing lists not to ``rent'' their names. Its widely-used free privacy-enhancing software, the Internet Junkbuster Proxy (TM), blocks unwanted cookies and banner ads. Based in Green Brook, NJ, Junkbusters is a ``virtual corporation'' whose mission is to free the people of the world from junk communications.
