Don Aslett on Dejunking

Not all junk can be blamed on direct marketing

[Feedback]  The enemy within: household junk

As a lighthearted side-bar, let's remember not all the junk in our lives can be blamed on others: things that we used to find good and useful fall out of favor through wear or changing taste. Don Aslett, best known for ``the cleaning bible'' Is there life after housework? has written several books about household junk and how to reduce it. (He also has a business that sells cleaning supplies.)

Aslett's Not For Packrats Only is perhaps the seminal tract on dejunking, though this theme appears across his writings, including Don Aslett's Clutter-Free! and The Office Clutter Cure: How to Get Out from Under It All! Here is an excerpt from Clutter's Last Stand: It's Time to De-Junk Your Life!

It is junk if:
  1. it's broken or obsolete (and fixing it is unrealistic)
  2. you've outgrown it, physically or emotionally
  3. [or...]
  4. it will shock, bore, or burden the coming generation.
As Aslett says in The Cleaning Encyclopedia:
Get rid of it! What are you waiting for? It will never get easier. Start today! It doesn't cost a dime!
The same can be said of junk communications.
